would Jesus waste His time on Twitter or Facebook?

evangelism, sharing Christ online, Internet Evangelism Day, Toni Birdsong. . . I will seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. Ezekiel 34:12

by Toni Birdsong
A well-meaning friend asked me the other day: “C’mon, if Jesus were here, do you really think He would be wasting His time on Twitter or Facebook?”

I answered my friend . . .

I don’t know but what I do know is this: That Jesus is here—He never left us. His Holy Spirit is turning cyberspace inside out in search of His beloved. He never rests or ceases to rescue. He is stirring a fire in His people and rising up audible voices around every digital corner. No bandwidth can contain His reach and no amount of ram can house His power.

I do know that more than 206 million people are on the Internet each day. That 70% of them are on Facebook. People tweet their thoughts at the breakneck pace of 640 tweets per second. And 74% of people talk more online each day than they do in real life.

Would Jesus crash that kind of party?

I don’t know, but I do know this: I see Jesus tweeting, blogging, and posting every day through hearts burning to know Him and make Him known—anywhere—be it cyberspace or Cincinatti. I see Him meet people in their brokenness and sprout common ground between strangers online bound to echo throughout eternity.

I see the message of salvation travel 7,000 miles in 7 seconds and bust through racial, political, and language barriers in countries once closed to the gospel. I see compassion take down the devil’s schemes as believers willingly war to put a dent in the darkness online. I see love coax hopelessness down from the ledge and prayer so powerful it shakes the nations.

Would Jesus be on Facebook?

I don’t know but I do know this: That our God will stop at nothing to seek and save His children. He has launched a worldwide search-and-rescue mission to bring the lost back home and restore what’s been broken.

C’mon, Jesus? On Twitter?

I don’t know but I do know this: He doesn’t need 206 million lost sheep to persuade Him.

As long as there is just oneone wretch, one misfit, one prodigal, or one turned-around sheep—you can be sure the unrelenting Shepherd will be logged on pursuing His own.

Do you see God online? Share a story!

God has launched a worldwide search-and-rescue mission to bring lost hearts home. Will you light the way? #LiveSticky

Are you kidding? I saw Him right up there! That’s inspired writing my friend. On Easter Sunday, I received an email from a woman in Kuwait. When I read her note of encouragement (http://bit.ly/eJXJz4), I saw God. It was a totally unexpected experience, facilitated and only made possible through technology. Yes, Jesus is online, and He is not wasting His time.

  • Dave Ingland

Yes, God is online and is making himself known through an account known as @stickyjesus!

Thanks for sharing this – I fully agree! We love having a presence in this wonderful online world, and believe fully that He does too =)

Gordon – YOU inspired the 7K in 7 seconds line as I think about our meeting & how you introduced me to the woman in Africa that we got to pray for together!

Real people. Real connections. Real growth.

And through a persistent, courageous follower with this blog: http://www.daveingland.com/.

Praying for your transition to Santa Paula. God is allowing you to unwrap new gifts you didn’t even realize you had. I hear it in your writing, Dave. Sending a DM to my FB friends in Burbank (where I’m from) to visit you at DCH Honda of Oxnard.

Well, the Bible does say if two or more are gathered, Jesus is in the midst. There’s always two or more gathered on FB & Twitter. 😉

    I love this:

“I don’t know but what I do know is this: That Jesus is here—He never left us. His Holy Spirit is turning cyberspace inside out in search of His beloved.”

We often forget that God is one. If the Holy Spirit is at work online, then why wouldn’t Jesus in the flesh if He had had the opportunity?

Plus, there were plenty of people in Jesus day asking why he was “wasting” his time at weddings, at parties with sinners, at a well with a Samaritan…

Amen, Paul! Jesus was criticized for hanging out with the riff-raff and so we should not be surprised when as digital disciples, we get sideways glances for tending to our mission field (and we do get them!)

Let’s head out and go straight through Samaria . . . while others safely go around the city limits. I refuse to miss the miracles. I refuse to divide from a digital culture that is spiraling and frantically searching for hope.

so true kelly! There are millions gathered — amplified power & praise!

This was good. I recently got off Facebook because I personally felt I was wasting too much time on it. In my mind, I felt I needed to turn Facebook off and turn to my blog which I feel is my primary ministry. Perhaps I was too rash in the decision, but I think it’s done some good. Maybe I’ll go back to Facebook but not now. Thanks for this post, however. I found it encouraging.

I think you said it best–He is living in us and we are there, so yes, He is there. Jesus stood in public places and taught and preached, so did the apostles. Aren’t FB and Twitter just today’s marketplace, so to speak? The grassy hillside where many can gather to hear? I think the reason people would feel it “beneath” Jesus to Tweet etc is because so many of us are just wasting time on those sites. But so many aren’t. And Jesus wouldn’t be. We’re talking. And people are listening. Let’s ask Him to fill our mouths with His words!

Good article! I see God everywhere online and offline. The internet is an awesome way to spread the word of the Lord and to come together learning his mighty word. Thanks for sharing. :)

Joe, I always have to pose this question of balance to the Lord in my quiet time. It’s a serious issue. I use a kitchen timer by my computer. I connect with my online community 30 min in the AM & PM — to encourage, find who to pray for, respond.

    This post may help: http://stickyjesus.com/2011/01/7-ways-to-maximize-your-time-online/

Praying for balance, discernment, and impact for you, me & all of His followers! Thanks for coming by today!

So true, Jennifer! Everyone is talking but what are we really talking about? Love this sobering verse:

“You have given me only a few days to live. My whole life doesn’t seem like anything to you. No man’s life lasts any longer than a breath.” – Psalm 39:4-5, NIV

May we always put obedience before enthusiasm, use our time well & speak the Good News to those around us!

  • Juliedumond

Jesus is alive and well in our techno world. I like that He can connect me to brothers and sisters all over the world for encouragment and for prayer. We are ONE body and we are about the Father’s business of expanding His kingdom by proclaiming HIM in every conversation we have- in face to face- on the phone…on the computer…Jesus is all about us talking about Him no matter the forum.
He smiles and says Look at the Children down there sharing me with others! AND THEN HE SMILES and turns to the enemy….who stands accusing..and says look at all of them- They ARE MINE!

  • Juliedumond

and then Jesus adds- and they are being me so others might see me and Come to me!

  • Anonymous

You’ve got that right, Phil! Love the unity I’m seeing from His body in realizing the power of this space. Thanks for coming by! So good to meet you!

  • Anonymous

So true, Julie — He is all about it! I do believe He smiles on us. I pray courage, confidence & a reliance on His power to allow us all to stick with the mission at hand! We are ONE body — AMEN!

Interesting article, and very true. God has acted on many people’s lives through our online ministry ETM (http://www.EternalTruthMinistry.com). Twitter, Facebook, email, forums, and even through games like World of Warcraft and Rift.

Wherever people go to spend time is where the church should be reaching out to the lost.

  • Lula In Christ

I have all ready shared this on my facebook and twitter. I just know that Jesus is on both of them.

  • http://www.wimpsforchrist.com M. Smith

Love it! Jesus was a man of the people. He hung out with tax collectors, thieves, sickly, and Samaritans. If the people are on facebook (and there are a lot of broken, lonely people who use these electronic forms of communication as their outlet) then heck yeah Jesus is there! Thanks for the awesome post!

  • Dena Elwood

    This was soooo GREAT!!!

  • Tami Heim

God never wastes a willing heart compelled by the love of Christ – in Him – all moments matter.

  • Tami Heim

Our hearts are aligned and fully support your ministry mission statement:

“Eternal Truth Ministry is an on-line ministry devoted to making disciples of Jesus in our world today through the medium of the internet using the eternal truth found in the Bible. We want to make people more than just hearers of the word, but doers.”

    Everything we do is #All4Him!

  • Tami Heim

Thanks for being a light-bringer Lula! We are His body – where we go – He goes with us. He promised to be with us ALWAYS.

  • Tami Heim

What a powerful testimony Gordon – Praying it inspires many to catch a vision of what is possible.
