the promise of rest

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. –  Matthew 11:28 – 30, NIV

And He will give you rest.

By Tami Heim

Pushing, striving, and straining are not how God intends for you to live, work, or serve. Instead He instructs you to seek Him first, trust Him always, and obey His Word. Choose that path and He will accomplish and complete all He desires to do in you and through you. Align with Him and the boundaries and balance in this life online and off  line become clear. Surrender your ways and move in His.

How magnificent this invitation to exchange a life of striving for a life of thriving in the abundance of His overflow.

As you seek Him, He restores and transforms you.

  • But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. – Matthew 6:33
  • Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. – Psalm 71:20
  • Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. – Romans 12:2

As you trust Him, He assures and calms.

  • God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. – Psalm 46:1-3
  • For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him we speak the “Amen” to the glory of God. Now it is God who makes us stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. II Corinthians 1: 20-22
  • I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. – John 16:33

As you obey Him, He guides and provides.

  • We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. – II Corinthians 10:5
  • For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  – Jeremiah 29:11
  • And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:19

Choose to believe all that the Father has promised you. Release that grip on your stubborn ways, relinquish the burdens you’ve carried far too long, and now rest in the irresistible overflow of His abundant mercy and grace.

And what shall meet the deep unrest around thee, but the calm peace of God that filled His Breast? For still a living Voice calls to the weary, from Him who said, “Come unto me and rest.” – Freda Hanburry Allen

How do you find rest that revives your soul?

Unplugging from the world, retreating to my small, quiet space, vegging out and meditating on the Word is how I unplug and recharge.  God does have a sense of humor about it though.  Because if I don’t do this, He will wake me up at 3-4 a.m., and I am NOT a morning person, and won’t let me go back to sleep.  Every single time I know it’s Him :)  I have learned to just say, “Ok, Lord.  Speak to me.”  He takes my sleep, He gets my attention LOL!  I guess it works for Him and me both when I get too busy sometimes.

April – that sounds perfect. I am fond of the small quiet places too. (Especially ones that are tucked away up high.) You have to love how He pursues, usually those early morning wake up calls are significant. I keep a notebook beside my bed so I can take notes! Thanks for coming by – may you soak in His peace and rest today.

I agree with April.  I was going to say..coming apart before you COME apart!  love this!

You always make me smile  @a6ced68753b07d62510e1e1e7be9618c:disqus  It’s wise to stay ahead with Him on that one.  Love you friend!

Holding tight to these sweet words this morning my friend.

Me too. I want to move in His strength, not my own.

I found rest this morning reading this blog post as I sit in the waiting room at MD Anderson for my preop appointment for next week when I start chemo. I find myself still wanting to fight for myself in matters I have no business. I loved what you said about “pretensions setting up against the knowledge of God”. Ok that hit a home run with me and confirmed yet again, you’d think I’d get it, the verse that God meets me right where I am. I am standing on holy ground because where He lives is holy.
So thankful you follow His lead that leads me straight back to Him.
    Love,
    B+

I am praying for you and the days ahead. May the overwhelming size of this circumstance be replaced with the overwhelming love and peace of your mighty Savior. He is with you and for you – nothing is beyond the reach of His grace. Take heart – He has overcome it all. God bless you and give your soul rest as He leads you through this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I’ve learned that coming to Jesus is not enough. Gasp! It’s definitely a starting place. However, if I want to experience true rest, I’ve got to remove the yoke that is upon me and replace it with His. For me, that seems to be easier said than done. I’m still working on this.
Thanks for the very uplifting post.

Dear @melindalancaster:disqus  – no GASP here. I know what you mean oh so well. I’ve shown up many times and left without making that sweet exchange. Praise God that He loves us while we learn how to get it right.

And that is just what it is…an exchange. We get the sweet end of the deal. I’m so grateful for God’s loving patience. I can be a very slow learner.

I find that getting away from everyone and being in nature helps me get myself back together.  When I was a teenager living in CT, I used to go to the beach.  While that sounds like a good thing to do in FL, it’s too crowded, too hot, and you can’t hear the waves on the rocks, because there aren’t any.  I miss the CT beaches.  :)

  • Tami Heim

There’s something quite wonderful about being close to the water. Every year we go to Sandibel Island in August. The beaches are empty and the breezes from the water are amazing. It helps me refresh and reconnect in every way. My quiet time is rich.

I am sure the beaches in CT are lovely. You make me want to go for a visit. Thanks for sharing @slcsand:disqus . I pray God brings you a special peace tonight as your remember this place you love.
