I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t aware of God or in love with the idea of Him. My grandmother was a Hungarian immigrant and a devout Catholic. She loved me and wanted me to know who I was and whose I was.
My early memories are of attending 5:30 AM mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The grandeur of God filled the sanctuary as I quietly paged through her prayer book, counted the beads on her rosary, and carefully arranged her holy cards. She made sure I was raised and educated in the faith and she taught me to be faithful as I observed her example.
Just as it was for the psalmist, it was true for me.
“God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to His eyes.”
Psalm 18:24, The Message
In the rewrite of my heart He changed my ambition to His. And so far the story has been exceedingly and abundantly more than I could have ever dreamed. I’ve seen members of my family restored to Christ. In 1981, I married the love of my life and best friend, Dale. We delight in our daughter Zoë, and her husband Matt. Our joy unspeakable comes as we watch God beautifully direct their life.
In 2010, Dale and I were wrecked by a crazy love for 138 orphans in Jeremie, Haiti. Through our church, Long Hollow Baptist and in partnership with the Global Orphan Project and El Shaddai Ministries, we are compelled by love to go to Haiti and serve the children often.
Everyday we give thanks to the One we follow and the adventure of His plan in our life.
My professional journey has been rich and rewarding. I spent 22 years growing and learning from some of the finest retail professionals ever employed at Federated Department Stores. They rewarded my service with promotions and gave me the opportunity to lead others through many years of change and growth.
Then we followed the call to Ann Arbor where I joined the leadership team of Borders Inc. After two years, I was told I would assume the role of president in 2000. God gave me the strength, grace, and courage to step into the task. Then He gave me the wisdom to understand the values of vision, initiative, focus, responsibility, and attitude. It was there I learned how to see the God-given gifts in others and my role in unwrapping them for His glory. There are no words for the inside-out work God did in me during those blessed years in Ann Arbor.
At the start of a new year in 2004, I followed the God-designed plan to leave my post at Borders and invest the next year fully focused on my daughter and family. That year unfolded like a love letter from God. Once Zoe left for college, He sent us to Nashville, TN where I became the chief publishing officer for Thomas Nelson Publishers. I will always be in awe of the privileges and people who were woven into my life through that experience.
I am passionate about the God-inspired truth He pumps into the hearts of His children and excited that I was born for such a time as this. He’s kept me in the business of getting His message, as it is placed in my heart and the hearts of others, out into this world. That passion led me to serve with an amazing team as a partner for The A Group – Brand Development. Those two years of my life were transforming.
As the current president and CEO of the Christian Leadership Alliance, I lead an organization that exhorts, equips, and empowers Christian leaders to think biblically and lead effectively as faithful stewards in the service of Jesus Christ. I celebrate being born for such a time as this and embrace how technology enables God’s people to be His light online. I’m delighted you’ve stopped by here. Toni and I pray our work inspires, equips, and encourages you to make Jesus known through your daily digital presence.
