humility: one word and a whole life

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross! Philippians 2:8, NIV

By Tami Heim

Inspired by Alece, at Grit & Glory, 2011 started with a one-word non resolution: Humility. As Christmas approaches and reflections on this past year begin to accumulate, people around the world celebrate the Breath of Heaven coming down to earth. God sends His Son and the world’s first introduction to the long awaited Saviour is a baby sleeping in a manger. Announced by prophets centuries before His birth, He arrives as our only Way, Truth, and Life. Every step, word, and action is marked with humility and testifies to the great love of the Father. That one word, humility, reflects His whole life.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

– Philippians 2:5-7, NIV

7 ways to breathe life into the words you release

Speak what is good, kind, and true.

By Tami Heim

But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned. ~ Matthew 12:36-27 , NIV

The idea that what you write and say doesn’t matter is simply not true.  Your words carry with them the power to bring life and truth or take them both away.

A day doesn’t pass where your words aren’t influencing the thinking, behavior, or development of another person. You create, lead, and influence with the words you release. Think about the last words you deposited in lives of your spouse, kids, parents, friends, boss, colleagues, staff, or even the last comment you posted in a rambling digital stream of conversation.

Are you ready to be accountable for every one of them? Even the ones you easily dismiss as casual or insignificant?

With your words something begins or continues. A simple or brief post, tweet, text, or status update can have an immediate impact on someone’s day. When you deliberately select life-giving words and multiply them over time, God uses them to ignite life-change. Use discernment, be intentional, and rethink the value of each word you are about to give away.

7  Ways to ensure you breathe life into the words you release…

10 ways to lovingly walk in humility

Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. -Matthew 18:4

He has told you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? -Micah 6:8, NASB

By Tami Heim

June arrives this week in its predictable place behind May. It settles comfortably in the middle of this year, even though it feels like a moment ago that January announced another new year beginning. Was it really six months ago that Alece, at Grit & Glory, sweetly disrupted our thinking as usual with the idea of a one-word non-resolution resolution?

Instead of penning the long list of ‘sort-of want-to-do’ resolutions, Alece’s idea was to pick one simple, powerful word, and live by it. Today we’re going back to our sticky one word pick for 2011 – Humility.

So what does it look like to lovingly walk in humility?  Let’s review.

Will you walk this way?
